What data sources can I use to determine why certain minority groups persist in identifying with minority status even in diasporas?

It seems a pattern that most people assimilate into the larger culture, but there are some notable exceptions. What makes those exceptions?

Okinawans in Hawaii, for example, identify as Okinawans even 75 (or 400) years after the islands were conquered by the rest of Japan.
