Earth’s Human Carrying Capactity Question

Evidently the maximum human population that the earth can sustain ranges from about four to sixteen billion. Which number do you consider most accurate and why? Is it necessary for humans to adopt more “minimalistic” and sustainable lifestyles in order to reach these higher population numbers or will technology advance to the point where that becomes unnecessary?
